While speaking with a fellow CS Student about what his internship
last summer, I found out that he had worked at NASA as a Computer
Science Intern. He was able to use the skills he had learned in
class to contribute to one of their projects. The prospect of
using the skills that I have learned sounded good to me, so I
researched how to get an internship. The first step was to prepare
a resume. This is the first impression of you that a potential
employer will see, so it needs to be a quality product There are
many things to consider when developing a resume: format, job
skills, references, education, activities and experience, to name
a few. Getting help with your resume is easy at JMU. There are
many resources one can use to make a resume a clear, concise document.
The resources I used to prepare my resume for my internship included
the Technical Writing class TSC 210, Lynda Cappicio from the ISAT
Department, other CS students, the CS Mailing List and the Career
Center. The Technical Writing class is in the Core Curriculum
for CS students. In this class we learned what will make a good
resume and used what we learned to create a resume. Lynda Cappicio
from the ISAT Department, who coordinates internships for the
ISAT Department, helps CS students prepare resumes and arrange
internships. Talking with other CS students who had already completed
internships helped me learn what employers were looking for. The
Career Center at JMU offers information about writing resumes
and also has more in-depth help if needed. Once you get into the
process and start finding out what to do, you will find many varying
opinions about what should go into a resume. When you start finding
jobs to apply for, try and keep the employer in mind when putting
information onto your resume. The link below is to the resume
I used for my internship.
