The Myth about Certifications

If there is one thing that I have learned over the course of my several internships is that the value of certifications such as MSCE have much less importance than they used to. I remember during my very first internship during the summer of 1997…all of the employees in my division talked of spending thousands of dollars on courses to become certified for one thing or another. Nowadays I hear very little of these certifications and only a couple of the employees I worked with have any sort of certification.

Recommended Course Work

Over the last three years I have completed every required CS course (except for CS 474), including those required for the Information Technology concentration, as well as several electives. Among the courses I have taken through the CS department, as well as those through other departments or General Education, there are several that I have always found to have given me knowledge or some skill(s) that were very useful, if not necessary, during my internship experiences...

  • CS 346

  • Getting on the Right Track

It is very important to consider your career goals and aspirations during your first year in college. The more opportunities you have to experience some of those considerations the better of you will be. This includes finding internships, taking part in internal CS department projects, as well as external projects. Doing so will give you first-hand experience in the fields you are interested in and help you decide which is right for you. Not only do these experiences look very good on a resume, they also serve to give you that professional edge over your competition and fellow students when it is time to look for a full-time position after graduation.
