Section 4.0 - Career Advice

Nearly everything a student learns in college courses can be applied to the work one may face on the job. Even for those working in information technology, the general education class required during freshman and sophomore years provides communication and problem solving skills necessary to use on a daily basis.

As I talked with other employees at Freddie Mac, I quickly learned that to be successful in a corporate environment an employee must possess the correct mix of education and work experience. I also learned that it is best to diversify your work experience. At Freddie Mac in particular, the managers value employees who have held different types of IT jobs. They do not want to promote someone who stays in development or stays in infrastructure for an entire career. By having a diverse technical background, an employee will be more familiar with the entire process. Knowledge if how the applications work from the development side and what resources it will take to make the applications work from an infrastructure side is extremely useful to know.
