Daily Log

June 2, 2003

First day of work. Today at work I was introduced to the other interns, my mentor, the company CEO, and fellow co-workers. The company planned a lunch for the interns in order to give us a chance to learn about the history of the company and the type of work they did. We took a tour of the building and also set up our intern office.

June 3, 2003

Met with my mentor and discussed the work I would be doing over the course of the summer. Downloaded and installed development tools (Eclipse, Java JDK, PHPDev, Vim, etc) that I would need in order complete my work assignments.

June 5, 2003

Today I studied tutorials on the UNIX environment and various UNIX commands. I also took tutorials on Korn Shell Scripting and began to write various shell scripts. I began to research and acquire information that I would need to begin work on my first project.

June 9, 2003

Today I continued to write scripts in order to log onto various machines and execute simple commands in order to access the system information of that computer. Later during the day I met with the System Administrator in order to set up user accounts for various machines.

June 11, 2003

I began reading PHP tutorials and writing simple PHP scripts. I created an entire test web page using PHP only so that I could familiarize myself with this programming language.

June 13, 2003

I continued to design first project. I drew simple use case diagrams in order to understand my project better. I also created a database using MySQL, which will store the data to be used in my program. I wrote PHP code in order to connect a web page user interface to the database.

June 18, 2003

Today I wrote PHP code that logged onto machines and access important system information. This information was then stored into the database that I had previously created.

June 25, 2003

I began to have problems with my project and so I created a new project design with my mentor. I also began to test my code more thoroughly as I worked with it.

June 30, 2003

I continued working on my project writing PHP code combined with HTML, CSS, Korn Shell Scripting, and SQL. I also began to test the entire prototype system. I also had the opportunity to eat lunch with my mentor today and discuss current issues in the computer industry.

July 7, 2003

Completed coding and testing the prototype version of my first project. I delivered my work to my mentor and we discussed what features needed to be changed and also decided that some new features would be necessary. Once our discussion was over I began to implement these changes.

July 14, 2003

I continued to develop the final version of my first project.

July 21, 2003

I finished development of my first project. I began to test my project and fix bugs. I wrote a few more functions in order to make to make the program more efficient.

July 22, 2003

Delivered the final version of my first project. Later in the day I held a project demo for about ten people in the company’s large conference room. My showcase went well and I deployed my project in the afternoon.

July 23, 2003

I was assigned a new project and I began researching the new technologies that I would be using to develop it (JSP and Java).

July 24, 2003

Today I sat down with my mentor and completed a design for my new project. It is going to be another web-based application that automatically generated our company’s status reports. During this project I will be working with a fellow intern.

August 7, 2003

I continued coding and testing my second project. This project has been more difficult than the first because I now need to share my ideas with my fellow intern. We have to work hard to coordinate our efforts.

August 15, 2003

We finished the first prototype version of our project and displayed it to our mentors. Today was my fellow interns last day so he and I discussed his portion of the project and what needed to be completed.

August 19, 2003

Finished a second version of our status report project and displayed it to a company manager. I explained how our system currently worked and what additional work would need to be done in order for the project to be complete.

August 20, 2003

Last day of work. Today my mentor and a few other co-workers took me out to lunch. I cleaned out my desk and also turned my security cards back into the company security officers.
