Here are some excerpts from daily logs that I kept throughout my internship. These are only a sample of logs kept and excerpts from those logs.
June 2 2003.
First day of work. Today there was an office orientation, all the interns for the Washington DC office met at the office. The day began with people being randomly paired up with a partner and having the partner introduce you to the rest of the intern class. We also went through presentations explaining firm policies & standards, professional code of conduct, and internship program events. We received our brand new laptops, configured them, and began using them to complete the various online trainings we needed to complete as KPMG hires. At days end, the recruiters took all the interns out to eat at a Japanese steakhouse and took us on a trolley around Washington DC.

For the rest of our orientation training, we traveled to Philadelphia, PA. We all met in front of the office and got on a bus for Philadelphia. We arrived around noon and ate lunch, met managers whom spoke about company policies, and viewed videos on firm policies as well. At days end, we all checked into our hotel and got settled into our rooms. We were in Philadelphia for the rest of the week.

Today was my first day of work after orientation. I was back in Washington and ready to get to work. Early in the mourning I met my Senior Manager, Don Farineau. He had just gotten back from vacation so he was catching up on emails and getting back into things, so I just worked on some of the trainings that I had to complete for orientation. We met for lunch, along with another manager and all the other RAS interns and went out to eat, we ate Chinese. Everyone in the office was friendly and nice. I enjoyed meeting new people and made sure I was meeting the "right people," for networking purposes.

Today I continued working on my trainings. I also met with my Senior Manager and discussed the possible engagement win, SSA (Social Security Administration). He explained some of the requirements and asked us to begin thinking of some possible solutions. Because the SSA was an audit, auditors would be asking questions and recording their answers on paper. We decided that it would be best if the auditors recorded their results from test work into an excel template that we create, and send it to a central location where there will be someone responsible for importing and updating the information into the database. Our manager liked the idea, and that is how we approached the task.

Today I was at the client site again (Rockville, MD) and had an opportunity to shadow and participate with an associate to gather access control, segregation of duties, and system continuity information and documentation about the WANG system, used by Human Resource Services (HRS) a part of HHS. Reviewed the documentation received.
July 17 2003
Today I reviewed CORE, a system used by the Department of Financial Operations (DFO), and made sure that not an excessive amount of people had access to certain screens in the system. I also helped analyze and design the CMMI tool, explaining table and relationship schemas and designs. At the end of the day I met with a Manager, Charles McKinney, about a database he wanted another intern and I to create to track change requests and work orders.
August 8 2003
Today was my last day, and I got to stay close to home and go to the Tysons Corner office. I also got to come in to work around noon, it was great! Another intern and I got taken out to lunch, I ordered lobster, and then we turned in all of our stuff (laptops, access cards, etc). I went home with a smile on my face, because I was about to go on vacation, and I had received a full time offer from the firm!
