Section 3 - Daily Activity Log Excerpts
Wednesday, June 9, 2004
I reported to the KPMG office located on 2001 M Street in Washington D.C. for the first day of the internship. There were a total of 77 interns participating in the KPMG internship program. We started the day getting to know everyone. With such a large group there were a lot of people to meet and everyone was very excited about the internship and excited to get to know all the other interns.
The KPMG recruiting staff discussed the details of the internship. They went over the schedule of events for the entire summer. We were given information about the procedures for our local office. There was a lot to learn, such as how to use the telephone systems, networks, and how to use our security badges to get around the office building. I ate lunch with my intern buddy. We discussed some of the goals that I wanted to accomplish during the summer. The afternoon was spent discussing how to use the KPMG technology. We were each given a brand new HP Laptop. We spent a few hours going over how to use the various applications, such as email, project management software, and other internal network services.

I was picked up by a taxi at 5am to take me to Dulles Airport. I used my KPMG issued Diners Club credit card for the first time for pay for the taxi ride. I flew into Salt Lake City, UT and took a small jet down to Palm Springs, CA. I arrived at the J.W. Marriot Resort around 2pm and met up with some other interns and headed down to the pool. The weather was extremely warm, so I relaxed for a bit until the 6pm welcome dinner.
The dinner was a huge event. We ate outside near the pool before heading into the grand ballroom. The ballroom was huge as they had to fit nearly a thousand people in. There was a lot of welcoming and a question and answer session by two partners. From 8-10pm we moved to another conference room to basically fill out paperwork. We had to show our proper IDs and fill out government tax forms. We finished up around 10pm, which was 1am Eastern Time. So, having woken up at 4am I was extremely tired.

Today was my first day in the office. I was supposed to be working on a DoD engagement for the week but I was taken off the project. So, I was in the KPMG office with several other interns. I started working on a database project with another intern. We had to read through several Notice of Finding and Recommendations (NFR) and add them into the database. The project was very interesting and informative because I was able to read about some of the projects that the IRM department works on. It gave me a feel of what IRM is all about.

I was at the client site at UFMS in Rockville, MD. I spent the morning working on the infrastructure team web portal with another intern that works for UFMS. Most of the work that I did involved brainstorming new ideas for the site. The actual programming work that I did was mostly HTML and JavaScript. I went out to lunch at Fuddrucker’s with five co-workers.

This was my first day on my new engagement. I met with two co-workers at the KPMG office and we drove two hours to the client site in Fort Lee, VA. We spent the morning interviewing some of the IT employees about the controls that were in place to keep their systems secure. The rest of the day was spent trying to get the documents needed to analyze their IT operations. We got back to the hotel around 6pm and went out for dinner around 7pm. We were back in our hotel rooms around 9pm to check emails and review some of the documentation that we received from the client site.

This was my last day at the office. I spent the morning finishing the workpapers that I wrote for my engagement. In the afternoon, I had an exit interview with a senior manager at KPMG to discuss my internship where I received an offer to work full-time at KPMG. I then returned my laptop and access badges and headed out of the office for the last time as an intern. Later that night all the interns that received full-time offers went on a celebratory dinner cruise on the Potomac River.
