My name is Marcus O'Malley, I am a Senior Computer Science Major at James Madison. This summer I interned at America Online and received credit for CS 454. This was my third internship at AOL and it has been a great experience each year. The campus, the environment, the people just made it a great all round experience.
A little history: Founded in 1985, AOL initially offered limited online services for what was then a tiny market of personal-computer users. But with its hallmark focus on convenience, ease-of-use and community--and pioneering features such as instant messaging and parental controls--it has grown into the world's leading online brand offering its unique service across all bands and platforms. Today, AOL's membership has grown to more than 30 million around the world--with average usage in the U.S. at about 70 minutes per day and total system usage of more than 1 billion hours per month.
I worked on a few teams in Host Quality Assurance but my main position was working on AOL Wallet. I worked at AOL's main campus in Dulles, Virginia. I stayed with my sister in Manassas so the commute was about 30 minutes to over an hour depending on traffic. Thanks to AOL's relaxed schedule I was able to come in earlier in the morning so I would not have to deal with traffic. This saved time and frustration from sitting in traffic and helped save a few bucks on gas. I will be graduating in December and these internships have given me a leg up on other student who do not have this kind of experience under their belt. AOL was a great company to work for, for many reasons explained throughout this site. Please feel free to contact me if you have any futher questions.
