Career Advice for Current CS Students:
I believe that
throughout my internship experience I have learned a whole lot about
myself, my college career, and my future career. One key thing that I have
learned is that internships are extremely important and I believe are
essential in being successful in your desired field. I feel
that JMU provided me with a vast amount of knowledge in my field which has
helped me succeed at my internship. However, the best thing I received from JMU
was the ability to learn topics easily. My internship put me in so
many new and foreign situations where I had no experience, but I was able
to learn these new technologies extremely easily because of JMU. So along
with making sure you take part in an internship, also make sure you make
the most of your college career. Its not always how much you know, but the
processes that you have learned along the way. The next major piece of
advice I have is make sure you are doing what you enjoy. I believe that
internships are always fun because they are something new and you feel
like you are making a difference. However, while taking part in an
internship, look around and learn as much as you can about your
co-workers. Is that where you want to be when you are their age? Chances
are they started out just where you are or somewhere similar. Make sure
that either you enjoy doing the work you are doing, or at least make sure
this work is a step towards your goal. One thing that nobody told me, or I
simply never realized is: At college you spend a majority of your time
having fun and enjoying yourself, after college you spend a majority of the
time working. You want those two to be one in the same. |
