Getting the job:
I believe that in order to get any type of job or internship you need to be more than just smart. Yes, Employers today do want smart employees, but they also want personable well rounded individuals. So much of the work done in the hi-tech industry today revolves around teams and team work. Being able to interact and be productive on a team with many different personalities and abilities is very important. So my first hint on getting a job, is knowing how to sell yourself to the industry. Figure out what your best qualities are and how they can benefit a company in your field, because you will definitely be asked that question more than once. |

I am a strong
believer in its not just what you know, but who you know. Networking is
key when trying to establish yourself. Be as extraverted as you can and
talk to as many people as you can. Well over half of the recent graduates I
know who have jobs, were given offers from someone they knew or met through someone else. I know I was very fortunate in how I received my
internship. Two summers ago I was invited to a social gathering being put
on by a family friend. I did not really want to go, but I knew it was a
great way to network. While there I began talking with a woman and
eventually she
mentioned that she was the CEO of a software architecture firm in DC.
After I informed her of my computer science background she seemed
interested and told me to email her my resume. I thought she was just
being nice and that would be the last I heard from her. Two weeks later I
was called in for an interview and later that day I was hired as an intern
with a full time position after graduation. Granted this does not happen
to everyone, but it definitely will not happen if you do not
network
and
sell yourself. |
