Today is my first day on the job. My task for today is to setup my work computer and start on a functional requirements document. I need to format the hard drive and install Windows 2000 and then install all of the tools that I need to do my work (Word, Powerpoint, etc.). The functional requirements document describes the requirements that the company needs in their network, things such as web services, database services, mail services, online backup, offline backup, and a shared file store.

I used the skills that I learned in CS 460 today to setup a wireless router. I needed to know what a gateway address was and realize local IP addresses aren't routable and what addresses are reserved for local use. I also had to do some research and find out how to configure a Linksys router manually. For example, how do you set it up so the router has a certain address and how to configure the DHCP server that is built into the router.

After many weeks of research we decided on a server that we would like to purchase. Today I purchased a Dell PowerEdge 750 with a RAID controller. I also started researching how to configure the RAID controller. It seems to be straight forward. Dell includes software that will allow it to be configured correctly. We want a mirrored RAID, so that if one hard drive goes down then the other one can be used without any loss of data.

Since, the products that we ordered take awhile to be shipped here. I started a new project, a research project. Today I started research on Trust Based Computing. It seems to be an interesting field. I searched their papers from the IEEE and ACM websites. I will be putting together a presentation that I will eventually present to Carlos.

Today is my last day at Solari Innovations. I just made the finishing touches on the network. I had to setup another workstation and join it to the domain. As I look at the network that I built, researched, purchased, and eventually configured, I realize how rewarding this experience was to me.
