What is ERAM?
ERAM is short for En Route Automation Modernization. This is
part of a large scale upgrade of the FAA's flight tracking system in
America
. The FAA has not updated their flight traffic equipment
since the 1970's and has awarded a contract to Lockheed Martin to upgrade their
system for use in 2009. Lockheed Martin outsources several substantial parts of
the contract to other companies, such as Lockheed Martin and Raytheon. ERAM is
part of a large, interconnected group of projects outsourced to CSC for
Lockheed and eventually the Federal Aviation Administration. ERAM is used to
output the flight location of planes to the right routing station and
specifically to the correct screens and printers within the station. The
total number of lines thus far for ERAM is over 17,000 lines of code.
