Finding Out About Job Openings:

This next step of the application process, finding internship opportunities, consisted of a cooperative effort between my Aunt and I. She is an expert in the computer science field, and is very well connected with both large and small companies. Therefore it was only natural that I enlisted her help in finding the most promising internship positions.

With her help, I applied for about 75 different openings. I had decided that I wanted to find employers in either the Boston or Baltimore area, as I had friends and/or family in both places, and wanted to be somewhere outside of Virginia if possible. I applied to Sun Microsystems, Lincoln Laboratory at MIT, and Wyeth Labs to name a few. However, the position that I was most interested in, and the one that I eventually took, was with Viacom Boston. Through my Aunt’s connections we found out about their internship program, which is advertised on their website, found here. They offered unpaid internship opportunities to any undergraduate students with at least a junior status. The particular position that I was interested in was called “New Media” and all I knew at the time was that it involved maintenance and development of a few of their major websites.
