Landing the Internship:

I sent my application along with a copy of my resume and cover letter as well as a copy of the recommendation from Professor Adams to Viacom and within about three weeks I received a phone call from their internship program coordinator, Andrea Naper. I had been notified through my aunt about a week earlier that I would probably be having a phone interview some time that week, so I was prepared. Some of the most important advice that I got as far as the interview goes was to always answer questions in the affirmative. For instance, if I am asked if I have a certain qualification or skill that I don’t have, then rather than saying “no,” I would instead highlight a similar skill or simply state that I would be more than willing to learn. I felt that that particular advice gave me more confidence when I put it into practice, and I also think it made a good impression during the interview.

As for the actual interview, it was largely just a question and answer session about my resume and my school experience thus far. She asked me about particular classes and projects, and told me a little bit about the company and what they expect from their interns. At the end of the interview she informed me that the supervisor for the New Media position that I wanted would call me some time in the next few days to conduct another interview. At that point I was fairly confident that they were going to offer me the position.

The second interview took place three days later, and the interviewer was my soon to be supervisor, Stephanie Miller. She basically asked me a few similar questions to those asked by Ms. Naper, and then began to discuss with me possible projects that I would be able to undertake. She explained that I would have some routine day to day tasks to handle as well as opportunities for more long term projects. After about fifteen minutes, she asked me if I would like to take the position, and I accepted.
